Q: What do I need to have an online lesson?
A: At the most basic set up, you need a good internet connection and a computer. Ideally a hard wired computer connection will ensure fewer glitches. If you don’t have a computer, a tablet or smartphone can work over wifi.
A better set up would include the following: external microphone, headphones.
Q: I have never had online lessons before, is it hard to learn like this?
A: Good question! It is definitely different than an in person lesson. There are a few things that take getting used to, for example: sound, pacing of lessons and the inevitable computer glitches! However, online lessons can be very exciting as we can work through details with the aid of the computer getting close ups and visuals.
Q: I don’t know if I want to have Online lessons, and I’d like to give it a try. Do you offer a free trial lesson?
A: Unfortunately, I don’t offer a free trial lesson. I do offer a 15 minute free Zoom chat meeting to allow a moment prior to your first lesson to meet and connect. I will accept a one time payment of a lesson before committing to a month to month payment for each term. Term 1: September – January (5 months) and Term 2: February – June (5 months).
Q: If I want to have an in person lesson how can I do that?
A: Depending on where I am, I will offer in person lessons if possible. I will post availability on my website and location of lesson. Please feel free to sign up on the website and we will get the chance to be together in person.
A. UPDATE: for those in the Victoria, BC area I will now be offering in person lessons at my home studio for 2021-2022 teaching year.
Q: I will miss playing with other people, how can I get that opportunity?
A: I will offer virtual ensemble possibilities by putting those who want to play together into groups. We will have Zoom meetings to work on a piece and discuss the piece. This will also give us the chance to see and speak with other cellists in the studio. As we can’t all play simultaneously, ensemble work will take a different approach. Each person will have a recording of the piece and can play along with the piece on their side during the zoom meeting. Students will learn to record their parts and submit videos in which I will put them together for a final ensemble production.
Ensemble Options: Cello Duet, Cello Trio, Cello Quartet.
There will be a one time (per year) additional fee for ensemble work.
Q: Will there be recital/performance opportunities?
A: As this is an online way of learning, recitals will look a little different. I will create year end presentations from the work created through the year. If there are students who live in the community where I am, and we can play together in person, I will organize those students a chance to play for one another.
