Learning to play the cello looks different for each student. I have taught students from the ages of 4 to 70+ years old. Whatever reason has brought you to study the cello, that is what guides me as a teacher. Each and every student learns at a different pace, with individual needs, desires and goals.
I will work with you to achieve all those things.
I have taught private lessons for the past 20 years. I earned a teaching certificate from the Victoria Conservatory of Music as well as, most recently, an Online Teaching Certificate from the Royal Conservatory of Music. Being classically trained, I follow a classical teaching method, and prepare students with technique in order to establish a strong musical foundation. I have prepared students for Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Examinations, music festivals as well as auditions for Youth Orchestras. These are all areas one can pursue should they wish to do so.
If you are an Adult learner and new to the cello, pursuing an orchestra/university audition may not be your goal, but you may have the desire to play with friends or find a small ensemble to be part of. These goals can be achieved with dedication, patience and desire.
I also love to explore different styles of music on the cello and am open to working with a student who wants to learn a variety of styles. Everyone has to learn the foundations, and with that you become free to explore a variety of cello playing styles.
Online lessons is a new platform for teaching which I have been finding to be quite successful, for both the student and myself. There is a learning curve, however I believe it will be a great tool for the future study. I incorporate a blended approach of learning in regards to online lessons. What does this mean? This means that we will have our online lesson and in addition I will ask for recorded audio/video clips to be sent to me for review. I, too, will send audio/video clips for students to have and refer to. In receiving these files I am able to hear your playing in greater detail in order to help you even further.
I look very forward to working with you!
